Brazil Held By Costa Rica In Copa America Opener

Brazil Held by Costa Rica in Copa America Opener

0-0 Draw Leaves Group D Wide Open

Inglewood, California - June 25, 2024

Five-time Copa America champions Brazil were held to a disappointing 0-0 draw by Costa Rica in their opening Group D match at SoFi Stadium on Tuesday. Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, the Selecao was unable to find a breakthrough against a resolute Costa Rican defense.

Brazil started the match brightly and created several early chances. Neymar had a shot saved by Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas in the opening minutes, and Vinicius Junior fired wide from a promising position shortly after. The Brazilians continued to press, but the Costa Ricans defended stoutly and limited their opponents to long-range efforts.

Costa Rica grew into the game as the first half progressed and had a few chances of their own. Joel Campbell tested Brazil goalkeeper Alisson with a free kick from just outside the penalty area, and Celso Borges sent a header wide from a corner kick.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Brazil controlling possession but struggling to create clear-cut chances. Neymar was well-marshalled by the Costa Rican defense, and Richarlison failed to make the most of a couple of half-chances. Costa Rica remained dangerous on the counterattack, and Campbell almost snatched a winner in the closing stages but was denied by an excellent save from Alisson.

The draw leaves Group D wide open heading into the second round of matches. Brazil will face Peru on Saturday, while Costa Rica will take on Colombia.
